Importance of exercise for students

Diet and inactivity in students are responsible for a huge rise in obesity in students.  Physical activity (PA) begins to decline in adolescence, this can be due to lot’s of different factors, more study time, too much screen time, the popularity on online content providers, computer games etc.  This decline in activity has accelerated in recent years which is very worrying so we’re going to look at the important of exercise for students.

Exercise Boosts Concentration and Focus

The old age saying, healthy mind health body is so good.  While it may not seem as obvious, physical activity plays an important role in developing the brain and supporting essential mental functions.

Research shows that physical exercise helps the brain work more efficiently, regular moderate intensity exercise can increase the size of the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. Exercise also helps release growth factors, chemicals in the brain that affect the growth and survival of new brain cells as well as blood vessels in the area.

Sports you can do on your own

Aids in Proper Development and Growth

Nearly all children and teenagers eat too much junk food and unhealthy processed foods.  The more healthy foods a student eats, the lower the chance of becoming obese or having blood pressure problems.  Add in regular physical activity, which is vital for a childs development, exercise helps develop their movement skills, co ordination, helps bones and builds a healthy heart and stronger muscles. Physical activity also helps your child keep a healthy and normal bodyweight and develop healthy and strong cartilage and bones.

Exercise leads to improved motor skills (such as hand-eye co-ordination), better thinking and problem-solving, stronger attention skills and improved learning.

Sports that cause the most injuries

Exercise helps overcome Anxiety and Stress

Exercise has been described as a €œwonder drug€ in preventing and managing mental health.

Stress and anxiety can hinder a child or adults ability to focus and reduce their academic performance and affect sleep.   In cases such as these, the importance of physical education becomes more evident. When students exercise, they get the opportunity to de-stress. Such activities provide the brain and lungs with additional oxygen that de-stresses the system.  The endorphins that the brain releases during exercise help to improve mood, energy levels and even sleep.

Mental and physical benefits of exercise

Exercise helps self esteem and mood

Physical activity triggers brain chemicals that make you feel happier and more relaxed.  And if you play team sports then there are additional benefits as you also get the social interaction and engagement with team mates.  This team work helps the communicate and learn from their peers, take on responsibilities for the team and take responsibility for their own actions.

This period of concentration is also great for getting the mind off everyday life, studying and other stresses.  Young people who develop an athletic skill feel more positive about their bodies and their physical abilities. Therefore, their self-esteem improves.

Sleep Better

Sports and other forms of physical activity improve the quality of sleep. They do this by helping you fall asleep faster and deepening your sleep.  The more you are active during the day, the more likely you will be to relax and fall asleep at night.

Just be careful not to engage in sports too late in the day.  Over exerting within a few hours of bedtime may leave you too energised to sleep!
