But let’s not have that ruin all the fun, we’re going to catch up on some European Championship trivia starting with the top goal scorers through the tournament history which started in 1958.
If we include qualifying rounds, Cristiano Ronaldo leads the charge with an incredible 40 goals! Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimović is next with 25 and Ireland’s Robbie Keane is sitting at 23 goals.

The Portuguese striker Gomes scored in three different tournaments.

Zlatan Ibrahimović – 6 Goals
The Swede played in four tournaments, scoring in the first three in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
Thierry Henry €“ 6 goals
Henry was part of the winning French team at Euro 2000 and was the tournament’s third-highest goalscorer. Elsewhere Henry’s infamous handball at the 2009 World Cup qualifiers was responsible for Ireland’s exit.

The Dutchman scored at Euro 96 and 2000, finishing Euro 2000 as the joint top goal scorer
Ruud van Nistelrooy €“ 6 goals
The big Dutchman Dutch scored his six goals across eight games in two tournaments. He retired with 70 caps for the Netherlands, scoring 35 goals over a 13-year career with the national team.
Antoine Griezmann €“ 6 goals
The Frenchman is another World Cup winner along with Henry. He scored six goals at his only Euros in 2016, winning the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament.
Alan Shearer – 7 Goals
The England and Newcastle legend was the top goal scorer at Euro 96.
Michel Platini €“ 9 goals
The France captain scored an amazing 9 goals in just 5 matches including two hat-tricks in Euro 1984, helping France win the tournament. Platini came sixth in FIFA’s Player of the Century vote, and was the President of UEFA until 2015.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 9 Goals
No surprise that the Portuguese superstar leads this list. A certain contender for the greatest footballer of all time, Ronaldo he has scored nine goals across an extraordinary 21 games in four separate Euro Championships, helping Portugal win Euro 2016. He will almost certainly feature at Euro 2021 and keep adding his tally of goals.
